Lay Versus Lie There is a lot of confusion over the correct grammar rules concerning lay versus lie. Present tense is straightforward. Lay requires a direct object, lie does not. Lay the book on the table. Joe lie down on the couch. Many are confused by the past tense. The past tense of lay is laid, the past tense of lie is lay. Yesterday he laid the book on the table. Last week Joe lay on the couch. Just rules to remember. Memorize and practice. |
